Gujarat stands as a leading state in the animal husbandry sector in India, renowned for its rich biodiversity exemplified by the Gir Forest, home to the majestic Asiatic Lion and a unique blend of dry deciduous flora and diverse fauna. The state is home to valuable indigenous breeds such as Gir, Kankrej, Dangi, & Dagri cattle; Mehsana, Jaffrabadi, Surti, & Banni buffaloes; Patanwadi, Marwadi & Panchali sheep; Kachchhi, Surti, Zalawadi, Mehsani, Gohilwadi & Kahmi goats; Kathiawari & Marwari horses; and the Kachchhi & Kharai camel. To support these assets, Gujarat has developed a comprehensive veterinary infrastructure that includes veterinary polyclinics, dispensaries, first aid centers, artificial insemination centers, livestock and poultry farms, fodder farms, disease investigation units, mobile dispensaries, and the Karuna Animal Ambulance. These facilities provide integrated services in veterinary care, animal breeding, disease diagnosis, and animal husbandry extension.
Additionally, Gujarat boasts a robust milk marketing network under the cooperative sector, which has significantly contributed to the profitability of animal husbandry practices. This strong framework plays a vital role in empowering women, generating employment, and alleviating poverty.
The fisheries sector also contributes significantly to the Indian economy and plays a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of Gujarat. Besides enhancing food security, fisheries support employment, livelihood generation, agricultural diversification, and foreign exchange earnings. Gujarat, blessed with a long coastline and a rich diversity of marine and inland fish species, leads in the production of species such as Katla, Rohu, Ranifish, Ghol, and Tuna. Notably, the Ghol fish has been officially designated as the state fish of Gujarat, highlighting its cultural and economic importance.
In 2009, under the visionary leadership of the then Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi, a bill was introduced in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly to establish a specialized university dedicated to Veterinary, Dairy, Fisheries, and Allied Sciences. This institution was named Kamdhenu University, inspired by the mythological holy cow Kamdhenu, symbolizing abundance and the fulfillment of all wishes. The Gujarat Legislative Assembly passed the Kamdhenu University Act, 2009 (Gujarat Act No. 9 of 2009), which was assented to by the Hon’ble Governor of Gujarat on July 7, 2009.
Kamdhenu University was established by the Government of Gujarat as a teaching and affiliating institution committed to the development of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, including Dairy, Fisheries, and related disciplines. The university aims to advance education, promote need-based research, and disseminate scientific knowledge and technologies from "lab to land" for the benefit of the state’s farming and rural communities.
I look forward to contributing to the vibrant academic and research environment at Kamdhenu University. My aspiration is to nurture an ecosystem that supports students, educators, and farmers alike empowering them to thrive and actively participate in the entire "farm to fork" value chain. I envision developing a dynamic platform for knowledge enrichment, targeted research, and skill development in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
