About us

Gujarat is the northern-most maritime state on the west coast of India situated between 20.1 and 24.7degrees latitude and 68.4 and 74.4 degrees east longitude. Gujarat is having longest coastline (1600 km) among the coastal state in India which accounts 19.79% of the total coastline available to the country. The capture and culture fisheries are the two important pillar which decides the success of fisheries development in the country. The central and north regions of Gujarat are known particularly for inland aquaculture mainly dominating in freshwater fish culture. The fisheries education, research and extension are providing innovation, fisheries professionals and played an important role in the policy framework for the sustainable development of the fisheries sector. Therefore, to support the farmers, students and entrepreneurs of these regions (Central and North, Gujarat) and for the development of inland aquaculture of the state, Postgraduate Institute of Fisheries Education and Research (PGIFER) under Kamdhenu University has established during 2015-16. The first batch of M.F.Sc enrolled in the year 2015-16. The details regarding the PGIFER are as follows:

Mandate

The Postgraduate Institute of Fisheries Education and Research (PGIFER) has a mandate to pro-actively promote, coordinate and implement the Fisheries Science in favor of quality education, research, and extension. PGIFER has an obligation to develop qualified and skilled human resource to address the needs of the fisheries sector. PGIFER is always ready to develop a suitable and skilled human resource to meet the needs of the fishing sector. The College plays a key role to disseminate the latest technological advancements amongst fisher folks of the State through various demonstration programmes.

Goals

  • To promote, coordinate and implement the efforts towards quality education, research, and expansion of fisheries sector.
  • To develop appropriate and skilled human resource personnel for addressing the needs of in the fishing sector.
  • To conduct basic and applied research programs in the areas of. fisheries.
  • To spread the latest technological progress among fish farmers/entrepreneurs in the state through various demonstration and hands-on training programs.
  • To develop the technical manpower to address the issues related to Inland fisheries (capture and culture).
  • To provide technical support and training to the farmers and entrepreneurs who engaged in Inland saline aquaculture.

Objectives

  • To impart quality education by implementing the direct recommendations of the Deans’ Committee Report in terms of course content, credit requirement, guidelines for postgraduate education
  • According to the requirements, the introduction of new postgraduate programs under fisheries faculty.
  • To provide and ensure adequate and latest practical exposures to the students in the field as well as in the laboratories through strengthening all the laboratories with modern scientific equipment as per the revised course curricula.
  • To upgrade and strengthen practical and work experience content in the curriculum.
  • To Integrate and coordinate education programs with other universities and research institutes for quality education and research.
  • To focus on relevant research problems for PG students which may help to solve the basic problems and plays an important role in the diversification of aquaculture in terms of resources, species.
