The College of Fisheries Science was established at Veraval on 23rd January 1991, under the aegis of the then Gujarat Agricultural University by the Government of Gujarat vide notification no. GKV-1089-310-K2 Dt. 23.01.1991 of Ministry of Agriculture, Cooperation and Gram Vikas. With quadfurcation of Gujarat Agricultural University, it became the constituent college of Junagadh Agricultural University with effect from 1st May 2004. Since 01/04/2021, the College is working as a constituent College of the Kamdhenu University, Gandhinagar.
The College of Fisheries Science, Veraval, was established specially with the mandate for strengthening the triple functions of Fisheries education, research and extension. It has a mandate to pro-actively promote, co-ordinate and execute efforts towards quality education, research and extension in Fisheries Science for betterment of the society.
The College has an obligation to develop qualified and skilled human resource to address the needs of the fisheries sector of the State and the Nation which includes capture fisheries, aquaculture and post-harvest operations. The first institute of this kind in the State, the College of Fisheries Science undertakes basic and applied research in areas of Aquaculture, Fish Processing Technology, Fisheries Resource Management, Aquatic Environment Management, Aquatic Animal Health Management, Fisheries Extension, Economics and Statistics and Fisheries Engineering. The College plays a key role to disseminate the latest technological advancements amongst fisher folks of the State through various demonstration programmes.
The College has gracefully completed 31 glorious years of academic excellence in the academic year 2021-22. Since the inception of the College, 574 B.F.Sc. students have graduated so far in 27 batches. Furthermore, 123 students have completed Masters’ and 28 students have completed Doctoral programme in different disciplines of Fisheries Science. The College has produced good number of quality fisheries graduates who are working in various capacities both in government and in private sector. In all, 34% graduates are working in government sector, 30% in private sector, 11% have moulded themselves as entrepreneurs, 5% are settled abroad and 20% are pursuing higher education. It is noteworthy to mention that total six students from Tanzania (Africa) obtained B.F.Sc. degree from College of Fisheries Science, Veraval, and one student from Malawi (Africa) completed M.F.Sc. degree programme in Aquaculture discipline in the academic year 2013-14.
The Mandate
- To develop skill / quality / qualification of rural and urban youth through fisheries education for the benefit of various fisheries and allied sectors.
- Planning, execution, promotion, co-operation, monitoring and evaluation of research and its applications in fishery sciences.
- To develop effective machineries to transfer knowledge and technologies to fisherman and fisheries industries through extension services.
Mission
The mission of College of Fisheries Science, Veraval, is to promote aquatic resource productivity in general and to improve the economic condition of rural community in particular through integration of teaching, research and extension activities.
Goals
- To make College of Fisheries Science, KU, Veraval as the one of the most sought institute in fisheries through planning, promoting and undertaking programmes in fisheries higher education through providing the latest knowledge and developing skills among the students at UG and PG levels to make them confident leaders in the sector.
- To identify the relevant issues/concerns/thrust areas/constraints in the fisheries sector and conduct quality research programmes for the overall progress and development of the sector.
- Speedy and effective dissemination of technological advancements in fisheries sector to the end users through proper extension activities and gathering feed backs for designing future developmental programmes.
Objectives
- To impart quality education at undergraduate and post graduate levels in Fisheries Science.
- To implement the direct recommendations of the Vth Deans' Committee Report in terms of course contents, credit requirements, guidelines for undergraduate and post graduate education.
- To implement postgraduate programmes under the Faculty of Fisheries Science as per the future requirements and expertise available.
- To strengthen various laboratories with modern scientific equipment as per the revised course curricula, thereby, ensuring adequacy in practical exposures.
- To integrate and coordinate the teaching programmes with research and extension activities and needs of the University.
- Developing skill sets among the students at both UG and PG levels for to make them confident leaders in the sector.
- Speedy and effective dissemination of technological advancements in fisheries sector to the end users through proper extension education activities and by developing feedback mechanism for designing future developmental programmes.
