The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the Polytechnic in Animal Husbandry, Kamdhenu University, Junagadh, was established in the year 2014 with the objective of promoting social responsibility, community engagement, and personality development among students through meaningful service activities.
At its inception, the NSS unit was sanctioned with a strength of 25 volunteers for special camp and 50 volunteers for regular activities. Owing to the sustained enthusiasm and active participation of students, the strength of the unit has been enhanced to 50 volunteers for special camp and 100 volunteers for regular activities at present.
The NSS unit is presently functioning under the able guidance of Dr. P. G. Dodiya, who has been serving as Programme Officer since April 01, 2020. Under his leadership, the unit has been consistently organizing a wide range of extension and outreach activities focusing on rural development, animal health awareness, environmental protection, and social welfare.
In addition to regular activities conducted throughout the academic year, the unit organizes an annual seven-day special camp in selected rural areas. These camps provide students with practical exposure to community living and enable them to contribute effectively towards addressing local issues. Through its continuous efforts, the NSS unit of the Polytechnic in Animal Husbandry strives to inculcate the spirit of selfless service and leadership among students, in alignment with the motto of NSS: "Not Me, But You."

NSS Special Camp (Year 2025-26)
The NSS units of the Veterinary College and Polytechnic in Animal Husbandry, Kamdhenu University, Junagadh successfully organized a Seven Days NSS Special Camp at Mota Gundala village from 16th March to 22nd March, 2026. The camp aimed to promote rural development, animal welfare, public awareness, and social responsibility among students. The camp commenced with a formal inauguration ceremony, setting the tone for a week of dedicated service. This was followed by a village survey conducted during the afternoon session, which helped volunteers understand the socio-economic conditions and animal husbandry practices of the local community.
Throughout the camp, a wide range of activities were carried out for the benefit of villagers. These included Swachhata Abhiyan (cleanliness drives), yoga training sessions, and a rabies awareness programme. A drawing competition was organized at the village primary school to engage children creatively while spreading awareness. Volunteers also conducted pamphlet distribution drives and celebrated World Sparrow Day to promote environmental consciousness. Additionally, tree plantation activities were undertaken to encourage ecological sustainability. Special emphasis was given to animal husbandry awareness, where campaigns addressed key issues faced by farmers. In addition, NSS volunteers actively performed street plays (Sheri natak) highlighting important social issues, effectively engaging and educating the local community.
Experts from the Veterinary College, KU, Junagadh delivered informative lectures on topics such as Clean Milk Production, zoonotic diseases awareness, and the process of preparing various dairy products, thereby enhancing the knowledge of local livestock owners. A major highlight of the camp was the Animal Health Check-up and Deworming Camp, which provided essential veterinary services. During this initiative: 153 buffaloes, 138 cattle, 400 sheep, 100 goats were successfully dewormed, and treatment was provided to sick animals, significantly contributing to livestock health in the village.
A total of 114 NSS volunteers, including 19 Diploma students and 95 Undergraduate students, participated actively and enthusiastically in all camp activities, demonstrating commendable teamwork and dedication. The entire camp was conducted under the able guidance and supervision of Dr. M. R. Gadariya, Principal, Veterinary College, KU, Junagadh, and Dr. T. K. Patabandha, Principal, Polytechnic in Animal Husbandry, KU, Junagadh. The success of the camp was largely due to the tireless efforts and effective coordination of the NSS Programme Officers, Dr. S.
